Nintendo and Sony are changing their subscription renewal policies.

As a result of the investigation, both companies will change the subscription renewal system.

Nintendo and Sony, two of the world's largest game companies, will update their subscription renewal systems as a result of the investigation conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Both companies will revise their current policies due to the non-competitive renewal system and the unwitting subscription fee of the users. Nintendo and Sony were also quick to take action in the past months, after Microsoft pledged to provide users with clearer information about the Xbox Game Pass service on how to cancel subscriptions and withhold payment.

CMA Executive Director Michael Grenfell explained:

“As a result of our research, a number of changes have been made to protect customers and help address concerns about auto-renewing subscriptions. Other gaming companies that offer auto-renewing subscriptions should review their practices to ensure they comply with consumer protection law.”

Nintendo won't be able to enforce direct debit orders

According to the decision taken, Nintendo company will not be able to offer its online market service to users with automatic payment method. People who want to access this feature will need to turn on automatic payment themselves after registering. Sony, on the other hand, will communicate with customers who have not used the Playstation Plus service for a long time and share information on how to cancel their subscriptions. In addition, Sony will not be able to receive such payments if customers do not use the PS+ service for a long time and cancel the payment.

CMA, which calls on game companies to comply with consumer protection law, wants to prevent profit from customers' negligence. . Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are among the companies that offer a subscription system for a fee.
